Founded in 1846, the Smithsonian is the world’s largest museum and research complex, consisting of 19 museums and galleries, the National Zoological Park, and nine research facilities.

The mission of the Smithsonian is to shape the future by preserving our heritage, discovering new knowledge and sharing resources with the world. Education is the core of the mission, from informal education opportunities to lesson plans for teachers and professional development.

The Smithsonian Institution Building (also known as The Castle) is home to the Smithsonian Information Center as well as the Institution’s administrative headquarters.
